Dr. Devendra Bisht

Assistant Professor -I

For years, my research has delved into open clusters (OCs), employing ground-based imaging and Gaia Astrometry to scrutinize the structural and evolutionary dynamics of the Milky Way. My investigations particularly concentrate on young to old age OCs, Blue straggler stars, and the binary star fraction within OCs. To reach our scientific goals, we'll use the observing facilities at the IERCOO campus in Sitapur, ICSP, Kolkata, along with other Indian observatories and available archived data sets. Few of my research interests include:
1. Mapping OC distribution in 6D phase space using Gaia DR3 data for better classification.
2. Identifying variable stars in OCs, aiding stellar evolution understanding.
3. Determining OC parameters, studying the initial mass function and to trace their orbital pictures.
4. Conducting spectroscopic analysis on bright and giant stars
5. Polarization study in young OCs.
6. Observing transit events using ground-based facilities to study transit timing variations in exoplanets.

I started my academic journey by schooling in Didihat, Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand, and progressing to earn both BSc and MSc degrees from the DSB campus, Kumaun University Nainital. I was awarded a PhD in 2016, which I earned under the joint supervision of Dr Alok Durgapal from Kumaun University Nainital and Dr R. K. S Yadav from ARIES, Nainital. After my postdoctoral fellowship at the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad (May 2016 to November 2017), I joined USTC, China, as a PDF in January 2018. I was associated with USTC, China, until May 2022. In June 2022, I joined IIA, Bangalore, under the mentorship of Prof. Annapurni Subramaniam. On August 24, 2022, I began my new role as a Scientist C in the Optical Astronomy department at ICSP Kolkata. Since March 2024, I have been promoted to Assistant Professor I. During my research career, I have published 34 research articles in international and national refereed journals. I have mentored several BS-MS students, and I am currently supervising two PhD students.
